什麼是新詩?新詩和舊詩有什麼分別?到底新詩有沒有所謂格式呢?初寫詩的年青人常常心裏有這個疑團。

用現代漢語創作的詩體

有 人認為詩無分新舊,只分優劣;這句話在廣泛的文學評論角度是對的。其實,「新詩」之名,是相對於舊詩而言,舊詩,即五四運動白話被廣泛使用之前所產生的韻 文體,當中包括近體詩(即絕詩和律詩)、古體詩及古典詞曲,用語以單音節詞為主,講求平仄押韻,每句的字數也有一定的限制;新詩,就是由新文學運動發展所 產生的白話詩,期間經過三、四十年代的格律詩(試圖用白話寫一些有格律的詩)、六十年代台灣的現代詩(詩多用較隱晦艱深的意象,詞與詞之間的邏輯距離較 遠)等調整和革新,發展至今,一般均以新詩來統稱所有不在舊詩體模式下、用現代漢語創作的詩體。

把新詩和舊詩劃分清楚

新 詩的出現,既然是文學發展和形式演變的結果,年青作者在進行創作時,便有需要把新詩和舊詩劃分清楚,至少自己要意識到自己在以什麼類型的詩體來創作甚麼, 要作舊體詩的話,就必須當中的寫作規律,如每句的字數,哪一句必須押韻,平仄如何排列等。寫作新詩,就不用受舊詩的句式所左右,而在於集中掌握如何在現代 漢語的語境下發現詩的語言,千萬別寫些既不合舊詩體統、又承襲大量文言和格律的不倫不類的新詩。(關於這種不倫不類的詩,可看下一篇「新酒怎能裝在舊 瓶」。)

擺脫形式上的限制

傳 統的文學分類以韻文和非韻文來劃分詩與散文,所以一般人印象中以為詩必須押韻,但詩這種文類發展到二十一世紀,無論漢語或英語語系,大部分詩作早已擺脫形 式上的限制,成為不受格律約束的自由詩體,換言之,我們寫新詩時不能再以押韻作為首要的任務,或單純以為必須押韻才是詩。事實上,舊詩在中國文學發展了超 過二千年,優點亦發揮到極置,後人亦難於超越,再加上格律傳習太久,逐漸流於僵化,無法完全承載生活在現代環境的現代詩人所要面對的衝擊,詩人只可以自由 的新詩尋找新的語言藝術和創新的呈現模式。

保留詩的語言特質

話 雖如此,新詩在沒有指定的格式和句法之餘,卻有其內在的韻律節奏和語言特質的要求。它與舊詩一樣,都需要有詩的語言特質,因為詩是使用語言的藝術,不但講 求語言的美感、意象的運用,它展示了語言無限的想像與藝術可能,同時是心靈意象化的呈現。換言之,新詩是用現代的語言藝術,呈現現代的思緒和意境,是現代 生活的載體。

新詩,又稱新體詩,興起於五四時期,以與古(體)詩有所區別。古詩多需押韻,部分需符合一定平仄和對仗,而新詩完全不受押韻、平仄和對仗之規範,只保留意象精鍊的特性,創作方式極其自由。
